Nativity Collectors
For many families, setting out the nativity is the moment Christmas truly begins. A Limoges nativity box makes that moment even more meaningful. It is a thoughtful gift for a godparent, a church friend, a newlywed couple's first Christmas or the grandmother who has set up the manger every year of your life. Each piece is hand-painted in France, hinged and arrives gift-boxed. Unlike a fruitcake, it is likely to become a family heirloom.
The scene comes together piece by piece. Look for the Holy Family, baby Jesus resting on straw, the Virgin Mary and a nativity angel keeping watch. Three wise men arrive in robes of green, red, purple and gold, and a shepherd boy brings his sheep. Stables and mangers, some with removable figures, set the stage, and an ox and other gentle animals gather close. Multi-piece nativity sets, a stained glass dome and a tree with a manger offer something for every mantel.
A single figure is a meaningful christening or confirmation gift, and a manger makes a beautiful Advent present for a family with little ones. Collectors often begin with the Holy Family and add a figure each Advent, so the scene grows with the years. Children love finding the newest arrival among the familiar faces. Arrange the creche on a mantel with greenery and candlelight, or on a tray lined with moss for an earthy feel. Peace on earth, and on the side table too.
