Birthday Gifts
Another year, another frantic search for something that is not a gift card. Limoges birthday boxes make you look like you planned months ahead, even if you shopped last night. They are personal, pretty and hand-painted in France, with a tiny hinge and a gift box ready for the bow. Unlike the cake, this present will not disappear in twenty minutes. It is a birthday wish they can keep on the shelf.
The party is on in this collection, with balloons, cake slices, champagne glasses raised for a happy birthday toast and a hot air balloon drifting off on an adventure. Chocolate cakes come iced every which way, and a strawberry slice looks good enough to fork. Teddy bears throw tea parties and cook up treats, while clowns arrive with balloons and bouquets. You will also spot hobbies to match their personality, from a mahjong set to a carrot-shaped car driven by a very proud rabbit. The hinged lid makes room for a birthstone, a folded wish or a single candle.
Some people collect one box each birthday, choosing a design that captures that year's big moment, such as a trip, a new home or a new puppy. Others stick to a theme, like desserts or travel, and keep adding. Display the whole timeline along a long shelf, or keep this year's box on the nightstand for a few weeks of admiring. For children, a box each year becomes a collection they will treasure as grown-ups. Make a wish, then open the lid.
